The Sceineyard Most of the roads, ponds and levees in St. Marks NWR were originally built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), part of Roosevelt’s New Deal after the Great Depression. The ponds range from fresh water to salt, accommodating the many species of migratory birds passing through Florida’s Big Bend. We take several hikes around ponds to observatories and along the levees, marveling at the variety of grasses and wildflowers. Butterflies are everywhere, including the migratory monarchs passing through the NWR on their way to Mexico for the winter.Toward the end of the Civil War, the area of St. Marks was strategically important to the Confederate Army for delivery of supplies and to the Union Army trying to capture the capital, Tallahassee. The Union regiment, which came ashore here at the Lighthouse, was repulsed at Natural Bridge (where the St. Marks River goes underground), but not before destroying several bridges and the salt factory, essential for preserving food for the Confederate troops. Have eaten there many times since changing ownership and it has been excellent. The Seineyard is still open in Crawfordville if you wish to drive closer to the coast. A pet fee of $75 will be charged upon approval. Our concern is that your pet is safe and so is our Retreat. This two bedroom, one bath beach house is on a canal in Oyster Bay with floating boat dock for mooring your boat and a view of the Gulf of Mexico and sleeps four adults. Offers easy access to fishing by boat, kayak or off dock. The bedrooms are king and full-size beds. There is a porch off the back for sitting. It has a fully equipped kitchen, washer and dryer and leather couches in living area. Linens are provided but you are welcome to bring your own, if you desire. It is adjacent to Shell Point beach if you want to sit on the beach and relax, it is less than five minutes away. Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, home of the world's largest and deepest freshwater spring, the sapphire water of Wakulla Springs boasts manatees, alligators and a host of diverse wildlife that can be viewed from a riverboat or the diving platform is about 22 minutes from our house.
