데키주쿠 리뷰

医者としても蘭学者としても尊敬された緒方洪庵江戸時代、200年以上にわたり鎖国していた日本において、貿易を許可されていたのは、清とオランダだけ。オランダを通じて輸入されるヨーロッパの学術や文化、技術は「蘭学」と呼ばれ、日本人にとって貴重な知識であった。緒方洪庵が、学生たちの学ぶ場として開いたのが適塾だ。天保9（1838）年に開塾したのち、文久2（1862）年までは洪庵自身が学生たちの教育に多大な勢力を注いだ。洪庵が江戸幕府から奥医師と西洋医学所の頭取を命じられ、江戸に召し出されると、義弟や子息、門下生たちが塾の経営を助け、さらには分塾までされている。当塾からは福沢諭吉、大鳥圭介、橋本左内、大村益次郎、長与専斎、佐野常民、高松凌雲など、近代の日本を支えた政治家や学者が数多く輩出された。
