We have stayed at this hotel 5-6 times in the last 10 years. I still think it has a lot to offer however I feel that we will never return. Positives: Food is good - not haute cuisine but decent, lots of choice. After a week, you are ready for something different but fine and most definitely improved on previous visits especially the desserts. Drinks also good. Particularly like the mojitos and red wine. It has always been very clean - the standard of cleanliness in the rooms and ground has always been high. This time I noticed a LOT of dust on the metal staircase leading down to the lower ground floor - was surprised. Entertainment team - super friendly, hard working, great with younger children in particular. Piano bar - such lovely view and ambience. It is special. Shame the table service has gone and been replaced by queuing at the bar. New dinner refurbished restaurant is nice- light and airy. Guest relations lady - very conscious and motivated to put things right when things go wrong. Customer focussed and professional. Lovely area generally - upmarket with beautiful views of the mountains and a very pleasant hour coastal walk to Puerto del Carmen. You come back from P del C and realise how nice Puerto Calero is in comparison! Areas for improvements: Queues - and more queues for the bars. Any time of day. Appear to be staff shortages. Was really annoying. Lunchtime restaurant - reminds me of an old fashioned school canteen. This now needs urgent modernisation and refurbishment. Facilities and entertainment for older children age 10+ is lacking. This hotel is best for more mature couples of children with younger children. Spa - don't like it, doesn't feel luxurious. Never bother to visit it after the first and second time as just doesn't feel special or luxe. Sunbeds - very old now and could do with a refresh. Paths around pool - starting to be a bit decrepit now - sharp underfoot in places. Staff - lots are grumpy and don't seem very happy. Wonder if there is a culture internally of being overworked or trouble further up the management tree - either way, either they need to improve their recruitment or improve some staff's attitude. The Chap near the pool bar was bordering on hostile some days as is the lady who gatekeepers the lunch restaurant. You feel almost scared to approach them and ask for help. Noticed a smell of drains around the pool area. Also not as tidy as used to be - quite often I had to clean up previous days' lollipop sticks and dirty cups. This never used to be the case in previous years. So it's goodbye from us. Wonderful memories here and still has a lot to offer. I would say it is more 3* + than a 4* offering. I would recommend it but I personally think it is has had its hey day and further investment is needed in staffing numbers, staff attitudes and hotel upkeep to push it back up to its former glory.
