To the north of the war elephant platform, King Lao Platform is a 6-meter-high platform full of carvings, on which a mysterious statue stands. Some people think this is Yama, the God of death. Others think that Yasovarman, the Khmer ruler, died of leprosy. The front wall is decorated with seven elaborate sculptures, including countless Apsaras (dancers or fairies). Even more spectacular are the evil-looking images in the hidden trenches behind the front guard wall. Centuries ago, these statues were buried because of the expansion of the original altar, so they still look bright, just like they were carved yesterday.
