The ancient city of Phoenix, known as the town pole, is located in the southwest of Xiangxi Prefecture, Hunan Province. With a total area of more than 1700 square kilometers and a population of 370,000, it is an ethnic minority concentrated County dominated by Miao and Tujia nationalities. In the southwest of Phoenix, there is a mountain which resembles the Phoenix flying with wings, so it is named after it. During the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period, Phoenix belonged to Chu, Qin belonged to Qianzhong County, Tang set up Weiyang County, Yuan and Ming set up Wuzhai Chief Lawsuit, and Qing set up halls, towns, Dao and fu, which became the military and political center of Western Hunan. The ancient city was built in the forty-third year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty (1704). After 300 years of vicissitudes, the ancient landscape still exists. The East Gate Tower and the North Gate Tower are still in existence. The streets paved with bluestone slabs in the city, the suspension tower built by bamboo and wood along the river, and the buildings such as Chaoyang Palace, Tianwang Temple, Wanshou Palace and Dacheng Palace all have the characteristics of the ancient city. There are famous humanistic landscapes such as Shen Congwen's former residence, Xiling Xiong's former residence and Tianjia Temple in the ancient city; the beautiful Tuojiang River flows by the city, and the wooden boats on the river, the Hongqiao and the corridor bridge type of Hongqiao Snow bridges and jumping piers built with stone piers in the river are full of the unique customs of Western Hunan. The ancient city of Phoenix and Lijiang, Pingyao and Langzhong in China can be regarded as four ancient cities.
