MPT Betwa Retreat, Orchha ★★★

"I don't like writing poor reviews and in this case I'm sad because the Betwa Retreat was obviously a fantastic place to stay a few years ago. But that was a few years ago and there is evidence of neglect nearly everywhere you look. This was our 11th hotel of our trip, we booked various standards/price ranges. Had stayed at a homestay, a hostel, a tent in the desert and some more pricier hotels. For Khajuraho we opted to stay in the Swiss tents, we had stayed in something similar earlier on in our tour. We had a nice welcome at Betwa although we were faced with filling in two registration forms whereas everywhere else we stayed had only required one form. The gardens were lovely, obviously well looked after. We were shown to our tent and immediately began noticing problems. The place was not clean. The TV didn't work, the toilet was very dirty. Bedding was stained and had what looked like cigarette burns or moth holes all over. The kettle did not have an automatic shut off after boiling (a fire risk). The phone only worked intermittently. Very concerning was the mold growth on the tent fabric. Talking of fire risk, the tents were spaced very close to each other which I would consider a fire risk. And just to prove our point there was indeed a burnt out charred remains of a tent directly opposite us. There were 4 power cuts throughout the night. It's only one night, we will get our disposable bedding out and cope we thought. But around 7pm the neighbouring camp started up its music system. I am in the music industry and you only need to play music this loud when in a huge festival. The music went on till 11.35pm and not even professional earplugs and noise cancelling headphones could silence it. Breakfast was mediocre. Looking in some of the chalets, they seemed to be in better shape than the tents so if you do book here, go for them, especially the Heritage Chalet. The tents though should be condemned, knocked down and rebuilt. Such a shame as this is a beautiful setting, very close to attractions with lovely gardens. It's just very neglected."
