There are two additional small sets of steps along the path to the staircase.The Abeel House is located next to Rondout Creek and at the base of the Wilbur Bridge. Judge James Betts house was built in 1904 on former limestone quarry lands used for cement manufacture for construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. Kingston began as a historic Dutch settlement in the early 1600s, and was New York State's first capital, which the British promptly burned down (1777). Many pre-revolutionary war stone buildings have been restored, including NY's first Senate House.
