In this two-day class, February 12 & 19 , 6-9 pm, you’ll be provided expert instruction to start work on a full-color embroidery piece. If you’ve never threaded a needle, or are a beginner looking for a little guidance, we’ll go over how to use a hoop, select threads and fabrics, transfer a design to your fabric, use a variety of stitching techniques, and finish a hoop in a couple of different ways. A hoop and all needed tools and materials will be provided. Some homework is recommended, but not required, between sessions. About the instructor: Dan Toomre is a textile artist from Redmond, Washington, who got his degree in Textiles and Fashion from Maine College of Art and Design. He's now pursuing his teaching degree, also from MECA&D. He creates functional pieces intended to be frequently used and loved, and delights in teaching others textile-related skills. Dan specializes in embroidery, mending, and quilting, and sews much of his own clothing. He believes that having the power to make and customize your own possessions is invaluable. Wine and snacks will be served as live music by Justin Ralls sets the tone for the evening followed by a meet and greet with two of the company’s celebrated performers, Charles Roy and Barbara Lima. The film screening will feature a reel of unforgettable moments captured from Heidi Duckler Dance Northwest’s unique site-specific performances, showcasing the incredible creativity and collaboration that has defined the company’s work in Portland. These performances, which blend dance with the distinctiveness of public and architectural spaces, have become a hallmark of the company's contribution to the city's cultural landscape. The screening is a reflection of the company’s commitment to public art and the power of site-specific dance, which allows us to transform familiar environments into immersive, dynamic experiences. LumberSnatched Rugby Pageant Hosted by the Portland Lumberjacks Rugby Football Club Join us at Darcelle XV Showplace, a historic drag venue, for an evening of fun and flair! The performance will feature the talented dancers of Heidi Duckler Dance Northwest, Charles Roy and Barbara Lima, who will engage with the architecture of the Keller Fountain and music composed by Justin Ralls, using the space to create a dynamic dialogue between the body and the environment. The choreography will reflect the beauty and fragility of winter against the unique character of the Keller Fountain, with striking lighting elements integrated into the dancers costumes to create a vibrant visual display. The music, composed by Justin Ralls fuses electronics, live instrumentation and the sounds of nature to create a compelling sonic landscape. The performance is free and open to the public, making it a perfect way for families and visitors to enjoy a cultural and artistic experience during the Portland Winter Lights Festival, an annual event that celebrates the city’s vibrant arts scene and its stunning winter landscape. The Winter Light Festival sprawls across Portland from Feb. 7th - 15th. The final day is the Lantern Procession from World Trade Center to Pioneer Square. DLC's tour guide, Chris Balduc, invites you to meet him close by at the Salmon Fountain on 2/15 at 6:00pm. We will join the Lantern Procession and walk to Pioneer Square, see amazing artworks, then walk back to World Trade Center, stopping along the way to see the illunimated exibits.
