Chumbe is an amazing remote island experience. The staff felt like family and made us feel special for our honeymoon. Fun and educational activities in nature like forest walk, snorkeling, and coconut crab walk.

Une petite île à 20 minutes de bateau de Zanzibar où la déconnexion est complète. Le personnel est compétent et aux petits soins, les repas buffet sont excellents, le snorkeling permet de voir de beaux coteaux et nous avons même eu la chance de voir des "Black Reef Shark". Les bungalows sont simples et totalement éco....comme tout sur cette île. La gestion adéquate permet une belle biodiversité .( crabes cocos etc). Il y a plein de petits endroits pour se reposer et une masseuse est également sur place. Nous recommandons fortement.

This is a natural paradise par excellence! Snorkeling the reef and the walk through the jungle were both incredible, as was just spending time reading or swimming or looking at the jungle surrounding the innovative cabins. The food was also INCREDIBLE. Best we had on the whole trip. Would love to go back soon!

I stayed at Chumbe Island for 2 nights in August during a trip to Zanzibar. I can’t say enough good things about the island and it’s staff. My friend and I had been in a hotel fire in Zanzibar a few nights before our arrival in Chumbe. We lost everything except our passports, cameras, the clothes we were wearing, and cell phones. Everything else was destroyed. The Chumbe staff knew this and went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. Vera, the island manager, gave me some of her personal clothes to keep so I would have something to wear the rest of my trip. They also found wet suits for us so we wouldn’t miss out on snorkeling. Every kindness was appreciated from the complimentary bottle of wine to loaning us a phone charger. Food was always delicious and plenty of it.. Our hut was number 7 right on the ocean. Peaceful and beautiful and amazing views of the ocean. The island activities were all enjoyable. The whales were migrating during our visit and we got to see a number of them in the distance. Snorkeling was a lot of fun. We went 2 days and saw some incredible sea life. A highlight was hearing the whale songs while snorkeling. My friend didn’t know how to swim and Mohammed, one of the scuba guides, helped him with snorkeling so he could experience the ocean while keeping him safe. They are doing amazing work with conservation, the environment, and education. Chumbe is one of those places that is even more beautiful than it’s pictures and I’m so glad I got to experience it. There isn’t a bad view on the island. Thank you to Vera and all the staff on Chumbe Island. You all are the best!

Escursione dell'intera giornata che permette di scoprire il Parco, la sua incredibile barriera corallina, i ritmi lenti, la pace dell'isola e il programma di mantenimento di un'oasi naturalistica unica nel suo genere. L'accesso all'isola è a numero limitato giornaliero, bisogna richiedere la disponibilità direttamente al reservation office (noi eravamo in 12 persone). Partenza con imbarcazione privata alle 10.30 e dopo circa 20 minuti arrivo all'isola, dove si viene accolti dallo staff e spiegato il programma della giornata: ore 11.30 snorkeling per circa 1 ora e mezza, pranzo, relax, camminata della foresta con salita al faro e ripartenza. Tutto è pensato e realizzato nel rispetto della natura (dai bagni all'energia elettrica) e del grande patrimonio della barriera. Vicino al ristorante vi è in shark view point, se si è fortunati e nel periodo giusto si possono avvistare le balene e gli squaletti... Il costo è abbastanza elevato ($ 110 per persona tutto incluso) ma bisogna pensare che si tratta di un "santuario" unico nel suo genere e personale dedicato in ogni momento (l'isola prevede anche 7 bungalows per il pernottamento). Se si soggiorna a Zanzibar è una tappa importante per evadere dal caos dell'isola, dai troppi turisti, dalla frenesia, per ritrovare il vero senso della serenità e dalla bellezza della natura.

I LOVE Chumbe Island. I have been visiting the island since the early 2000s and this is probably my 7th visit. The quality of the reef and the snorkeling is the best I have ever seen it and the bungalows and island experience itself has not changed since my first visit (which is a positive thing). While the rest of Zanzibar becomes more and more crowded, Chumbe Island is still an oasis of peace just a short drive and boat ride away from the mainland. The price includes all of your meals, snorkeling and other activities while on the island so while it may look expensive, the prices are very competitive once you add in all of the extras. Chumbe is also an incredible educational experience for anyone, and I highly recommend it to families - I visited this time with my two daughters ages 12 & 15 and they both learned so much about marine life and conservation. Be sure to do the night snorkeling if they offer it while you are there! Omary, their head ranger, has been working at Chumbe since the 90s - he's full of stories about Chumbe and his journey as a conservation ranger! Chumbe is not for everyone - the bungalows are eco friendly which means they have composting toilets and solar power. Make sure you are comfortable with that before you go! During this visit I stayed for two nights but next time I go I will stay for three. Thanks so much Chumbe!
