A beautiful hotel, a few steps from the sea and a short walk to the narrow streets and alleys of the ancient town. In another direction is the market, the bridges that separate Ortigia from Siracusa, and in thirty minutes yu can walk to the astonishing site of the Greek amphitheatre, the caves, the smaller Roman amphitheatre. If this was all it would be enough, but Ortigia has some tiny beaches where we swam almost every day, more restaurants than you could wish, bars and fountains. The staff of the Grand were delightful, always helpful, especially the blond, bespectacled gentleman on reception. The bellboy, the waiters in the restaurant were all charming and friendly. And I am yet to reveal the Grand's best kept secret: the rooftop terrace. We arrived at noon, the day was perfect. We wandered the streets, found a cafe for lunch overlooking the sea, (Mikatu) where we had a glass of wine (and 'snacks' - so many places offered free snacks, often so much we didn't want to eat anything else). Then in the evening a superb restaurant (O'Scina). But the next morning we were directed to the top floor for breakfast, and we could not stop grinning. A table outside on the balcony, a stunning view over the harbour and the town. (see photo). We had a wonderful time, we loved the hotel, the island and the sea, we loved the food and the wine and the weather, it was all perfect, like a dream.
