We stayed at Disney's Fort Wilderness Lodge from July 31 to August 2, coming to celebrate my son’s 9th birthday as a family. We had booked a dinner at Whispering Canyon Café inside the hotel. Our party consisted of 7 people – 4 adults and 3 children (ages 9, 8, and 7). It was late, the restaurant was closing, and while we waited for the check, the kids were playing quietly in the hotel lobby, within our sight. Suddenly, in the blink of an eye, a man – approximately 40 years old – stormed toward us, furious, claiming that a small bubble stick the kids had been playing with had accidentally hit him. The children immediately apologized, repeatedly asking if he was okay. His response was shocking – he yelled that he would call the police, crushed the bubble stick into pieces on the floor aggressively, clearly trying to intimidate not only the children but us, the parents, as well. What followed was even more distressing. Our three children were crying uncontrollably, terrified that they might be taken away by the police. Yet instead of comforting us or ensuring our safety, hotel staff surrounded us as if our children were the threat, while this man – visibly unstable and possibly intoxicated (he later threw away his beer cup in a bathroom trash can, seemingly to hide evidence) – continued walking freely around the lobby, approaching us again with an intimidating demeanor. Shockingly, there was no security escorting him or keeping him away from our family despite his aggressive actions. We insisted the police be called, and eventually, an officer arrived. Unsurprisingly, it was reduced to a “conversation” where it was explained that this man should not have approached us the way he did. Yet the hotel’s “solution” was to relocate our family to a room on the 2nd floor, while this man remained comfortably on the 6th floor – the same floor we had originally been assigned – even though he was clearly the aggressor and a danger to our peace of mind. On what should have been my son’s magical birthday celebration, he is now scared that this man might knock on our door or come after us again. This is not the Disney experience I believed in for the last 15 years. My children have been coming to Disney since they were 2 months old, we are pass holders, and we have countless cherished memories here – but this experience has shaken that magic to the core. We were not protected, respected, or supported by the resort in a moment when a family – with three terrified children – desperately needed it. Instead, we were made to feel like the problem, while the real threat walked away unchecked. This is not the “Dreams Come True” that Walt Disney World once stood for. It breaks my heart that my son’s birthday ended this way, and after so many years of loyalty to Disney, today my family feels unsafe and deeply let down inside a place that should be all about joy, family, and unforgettable memories. We’re currently staying at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, and I just have to share our experience to warn other families about dangerous pocket doors in bathroom. Only an hour after check-in, my daughter — who turns 5 tomorrow — got hurt by the bathroom pocket door. She opened it, and it slammed shut so fast there was no resistance at all, no soft close mechanism, extremely heavy door! The hardware (lock and handle) jammed her little fingers badly. If she hadn’t pulled away quickly, she could have lost them. There was a lot of blood and tears… I immediately called the front desk. A manager, showed up and offered to have maintenance check the door and to call 911 if needed. Since her fingers didn’t seem broken and she was already shaken up, I declined the ambulance. Manager handed me a card to file a claim — but of course, claims are closed over the weekend, so I can’t even start the process until Monday. Maintenance found nothing wrong with the door just agreed that’s poor design Other than sending up a few band-aids, Disney didn’t follow up, didn’t check on us. I had to call to see the maintenance response. Our evening plans were ruined. Later, when I tried to shower my daughter, two heavy bottles (shampoo and conditioner) fell off the wall and onto her feet, causing even more pain and tears. Maintenance came but said they couldn’t fix it without a special tool that only housekeeping had. We waited even longer for very unfriendly housekeeper to show up and finally secure it properly. This is supposed to be a deluxe property — and so far, all we’ve gotten is frustration and injury, with no real effort to make things right. I feel terrible for my child and terrible knowing that Disney likely won’t fix these door issues. I’ve since found many stories of kids getting their fingers hurt by these same doors mechanism. Clearly, nothing has changed. If you’re traveling with little ones, please be careful

We stayed three nights on a busy holiday weekend and loved it. While the lodge was full, it was still quiet overnight. Everything was clean and the cast members were friendly and helpful. We were able to check in early and they honored my room request. I don’t know what the theming was like in the past but I loved the rooms - they’re tasteful with some fun touches without screaming “DISNEY.” We had no problems using the app to check in, to open our room door, order food, etc. Even if you don’t have a fireworks view room, you can see the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the shore. The pool was very clean and the lifeguards are alert and active. The mercantile/gift shop had a wide variety of souvenirs and snacks, water, wine and more. They sell ponchos too for the rainy days. We used a Minnie Van to get to Magic Kingdom for breakfast at Cinderella’s castle. I followed advice to order the car around 7:00 a.m. for our 8:00 a.m. reservation and that got us there too early - we were the first people at MK that day! 😆 I would say ordering the car at 7:15 would still get you there plenty early.

This place is fine. I think if we had stayed in the main part of the hotel, we would have had a somewhat different experience. We were really disappointed with our first Disney experience and didn’t leave wanting to return like we had hoped. -When we checked in, I had some questions about transportation and the hotel in general. The cast member said he was new and that he was unable to answer any of our questions. -The shower was either freezing cold or scalding hot, with no in between. The sheets are paper thin and there is no comforter on the bed. They use the equivalent of a giant towel, which I guess is because they have such high volume they have to be able to rip the bedding off quickly. -We asked for a crib for our 2 year old, and it was never brought to us which completely disrupted their ability to sleep. -There is no room service, so if you find yourself needing food or something simple like a bottle of water at night, you’re out of luck. When we asked about water or anything else, we were simply told about the club level and how they have all of those amenities for those rooms only. This is something you might really take for granted at a Marriott or other hotel chain that gives you free bottled water at the bare minimum. -We decided to valet because we knew we were going to be using our car often. This was the most bizarre valet experience we’ve ever had. It seemed almost like an after thought, or they were just hoping nobody would use the valet service. We had to get a new valet ticket almost every time we came back to the hotel, and continuously had to give our name and other information, even though we saw the same staff over and over. -Another negative part of our experience is that, when we booked our specific hotel room type, we weren’t given the option of what view we wanted. We just paid the price to reserve a 1 bedroom in Boulder Ridge. We had a first floor view of a fence and some grass, which was absolutely not what we wanted. I would have paid more for a better view, but was never given the option. It would be really helpful to have separate categories for some room types based on views that can be booked (like they have for a few of the room types). It doesn’t really make sense to pay the same amount when some people end up with terrible views and some get amazing ones. -One of the most disappointing things is that there really were never any staff to ask how you’re doing or if your stay is going well. Even when I asked the front desk as we were leaving what I needed to do for check out, she just said “nothing, it’s automatic”, with no “how was your stay“ or a simple “thank you for coming”. Disney Parks seem to pride themselves on customer service and experience, but it seems to be more of an illusion than reality in the Hotels/Resorts. It disheartens me to write a review this scathing of a hotel I once loved. However, the update Disney has done to the standard room are the worst! From the roll vinyl floor, thin sheet, hard mattresses, poor housekeeping and little to no theming other than some wall paper that an intern hack out in photoshop. This room had all the charm of an airport Marriott, not a Deluxe Disney hotel, especially at over $400 a night and that was 35% off. On the upside, the food, hotel grounds and lobby was fantastic. My recommendation is visit the hotel have dinner and then leave....
