The PiHopa Retreat is was an unexpected and fantastic oasis in the center of Nelson. We cannot recommend it strongly enough. Sarah and her team have created 6 magical villas and have curated an experience that is wonderful and unique. Go!!!

A beautiful retreat tucked into a spectacular setting on a lush hillside. Sarah the host is gracious, welcoming and knowledgeable. Well appointed rooms with all of the amenities. Amazing breakfast that is also a feast for the eyes. A great gym, pool, yard games. Happy hour with appetizers and a chance to meet other guests. A very special retreat from start to finish. Thank you Sarah and staff! Five star plus!

Pihopa Retreat doesn’t just offer luxury — it perfects it. Every detail, no matter how small, felt deliberate, thoughtful, and indulgent — it all spoke to an experience designed with deep care and purposeful excellence. The bedroom suite was a masterclass in understated perfection. Plush, perfectly weighted duvet, monogram linen, a warm fire on arrival into the room, and a minibar curated like a boutique gallery, generously sharing the best of the Nelson Tasman region. Even the bedside lamp switches were intuitively placed, almost as if they anticipated your movements before you made them. This wasn’t just a stay. It was a reminder that true luxury doesn’t shout. It whispers through craftsmanship, through intuition, and through a commitment to excellence most will never see — but the discerning will never forget.

Sarah (the owner) and her team have created a terrific experience for guests. The accommodations are very well-appointed and very comfortable. One day, we enjoyed a rainy afternoon just sitting in our room reading books in front of a fire. Sarah’s attention to detail is remarkable. Little amenities in the rooms, pre-paid cabs to dinners in town, etc. The early evening refreshments, before sending us off on our dinner excursions, are a nice touch and it was fun to meet other families and couples. The evening canapés were delicious and the daily breakfasts were perfect to start a busy day. As a guest you can just feel the warmth of Pihopa and you will want to come back. We have been to New Zealand twice and if we come again to the Nelson area, it will be an easy where we stay. We simply loved our time at Pihopa Retreat.

The proprietor Sarah has created an impeccable experience of comfort and service that few luxury properties have ever equaled in our experience. The rooms/suites are perfectly laid out. The breakfast offers great options well prepared. The setting is spectacular. And that’s only the beginning.

We stayed here for two nights as our base to visit the Abel Tasman National Park. Everything about the site was amazing. This is a renovated chapel and prior accommodations for the on site clergy. The rooms have been tastefully decorated with every high end amenity, including small bar with many complimentary drinks and snacks, and well appointed bathroom. Delicious gourmet breakfast is served in the lovingly restored chapel, and pre dinner drinks and snacks were very tasty. We especially appreciated the complimentary taxi service to and from dinner in Nelson.

It felt like visiting family- nothing was ever too much for Sarah and her team. They went above and beyond to give us a very comfortable and memorable stay. We were travelling with 3 young children who were very well catered for and looked after. Little touches like infant crockery, even an infant toilet seat were provided for us - which was really appreciated. We hope to visit again one day !

What an absolute privilege to stay at Pihopa Retreat! From the moment you turn onto the driveway, it feels like entering a sanctuary and I was well looked after by Sarah and the team throughout my visit. The delicious dessert on arrival, sumptuous breakfast spread, and countless other thoughtful touches were memorable highlights. One of the most enjoyable places we have stayed anywhere in the world. Sarah and her staff are world class in providing outstanding personalized service from charming well equipped cottages, beautiful breakfasts, cocktails and canapés around the pool, and taxi service to/from restaurants.
