The central, riverside location and ample free parking (next door at Asda if full onsite) make Maidstone Central an attractive choice, and my wife and I have made it our hotel of choice when staying in Maidstone for some years now. However, this time, the pricing seemed nothing like as competitive as before - especially when factoring in the cost of breakfast (in itself good value with plenty of choice) and of wi-fi. Other disappointments followed. Our room seemed smaller than we had had on previous visits and it was only provided with towels for one person – although additional towels were to be had by asking at reception. It was fortunate we did have some of our own toiletries with us because we found the shower gel dispenser was not working and empty of gel. On reporting this to reception, we were asked whether we had failed to pump it – and certainly the soap dispenser at the hand basin had needed some hard pumping to produce only small amounts soap. On investigation, it was conceded that repair was necessary and that this would be effected whilst we were out that afternoon. However, by next morning this hadn’t happened, and we were promised a free standing gel dispenser to pick up from reception that evening. On enquiring that evening, nothing was waiting for us, although, when we explained, the receptionist on duty cheerfully provided us with a coffee cup of gel. Wi-fi access proved an additional source of frustration. Only 30 minutes free per 24 hour period seems a bit mean especially given that that means 30 minutes access rather than use such that minutes not used immediately cannot be used later in the day. Access required a password, and, as I didn’t have one, I had to negotiate the forgotten password route. Bizarrely, the system could only send the verification code involved to my email address, which I couldn’t get to without internet access. Fortunately, I could use my wife’s mobile phone data to open the required email: otherwise, it was a perfect Catch 22! As always, with the possible exception of the woman who had dealt – or had failed to deal - with the shower gel, we found the reception and restaurant staff to be friendly and helpful.
