This is a beautiful and unique hotel and most of the staff is extremely pleasant, but I have reluctantly decided to stop suggesting it to my guests, even though I live nearby. A friend from Spain and I were looking forward to enjoying lunch in their lovely restaurant. Soon after we arrived, a couple with a small child with a very loud game player we seated near us. The noise from her game shattered the ambiance. I asked the hostess if she could ask the parents to turn off the volume, but she refused. The child had the right to blast her noisy game, she said. I suspect I may have been treated this way because I'm not yet fluent in Portuguese and obviously not Portuguese myself. But we were made to feel unwelcome. It's unlikely I'll take a chance going back if this is how hotel guests are treated. My friend was interested in booking a weekend there with her husband, but now says that based upon this experience, she has decided to book a different hotel.

It’s the perfect place for a getaway! From the first engagement to the last, the staff was absolutely fenomenal. We were welcomed by a lovely reception and had a lovely dinner at the restaurant. The food was great and the waiters were very pleasant. I definitely recommend the cheese and seaweed dessert! The breakfast was one of the most diverse breakfasts I’ve ever seen and almost all of the products were local. The SPA facilities are very nice as well and the rooms are very comfortable. Overall, it was a great experience!!

Lovely characterful hotel, really luxurious. The staff were really attentive and the food was lovely. We felt thoroughly pampered. The pool was a little cool but ok once you were in and the view from the pool and terrace was great. The food was delicious although not cheap.

The property itself is beautiful. I would highly recommend this hotel and checking out the Schist villages close by. The town of Lousa is a quiet little town that invites you to stay in the dreamy grounds of the hotel. The spa facilities are some of the best we have encountered in Portugal, including a cold plunge. The only downside was we could never find staff to get a drink at the cocktail lounge.

There is such to commend this hotel: the setting in the old part of Lousã, the building which was a former palace, the gardens and pools, the views overlooking the forested hills, the breakfast and the period rooms. But what makes this place more than excellent is the quality of the people who work there, we never encountered anyone front office or back office who wasn't welcoming, pleasant and helpful. There are some things to be aware of: the hotel is a former palace which makes the public spaces more than you might expect but some of the rooms, though well equipped can be small. But I would definitely return. TJ
