This guesthouse was in a very good location in terms of distance from amenities, and the owner contacted me prior to check in and appeared helpful saying we could drop our bags off early, however this is the only good thing I can say about my stay here. The whole place had a musty smell, the bed was broken and uncomfortable, all of our towels had stains on them, the soap was a bar of soap which had been left from previous guests and the walls were dirty. On top of this, there was a sign in the bathroom asking not to put toilet roll down the toilet and instead use the bin provided. This was not a problem for us as we have been abroad and understand that some pipes are smaller. However, the problem was that the only 'bin provided' was in the bedroom and was on open bin, rather than a closed bin in the bathroom that you would expect after using loo roll. We only stayed for one night and spent the first day at the Pleasure Beach and watching a show, only popping in to the hotel for a very short amount of time after our day out to get changed and therefore didn't notice the towels at that time and were willing to let go of the other issues. During checkout the next morning, we shouted and waited through for someone but nobody arrived and so we didn't have the opportunity to discuss our issues politely, plus my phone had flew out of my pocket on the grand national and so I was without a phone for a week meaning I could not contact the owner on the number they had contacted me on to arrange check in. Fast forward a week and finally get my phone sorted and have an email from the site we booked on asking me to leave a review so I did a very shortened version of this; '3 out of 10 stars due to dirty towels and musty smell'. I later get quite a harsh text from the owner saying that I am a cheapskate and that she is disgusted with me. Yes this was a very cheap stay and I completely get that I can't expect luxury and am not somebody who is really interested in luxury anyway. However, if somewhere has '8 out of 10' on reviews, you expect a certain standard. I was expecting and was more than happy with basic and the simplicity of the property. I however do not think I should have to stay anywhere unhygienic and not have the right to write a review about it after. I just wish I had read all the reviews to start with and I would have seen that others have said similar things. I would not have gone in to this much detail had I not received the text from the owner saying that she has reported me to other hotels to say not to accept me as I am a 'bad guest'. Me and my partner go away a lot and have never had any problems whatsoever with owners and the review for Macleods is the first negative review and issue we've had. Clearly the owner is upset by my original comments which is a shame as I only wanted to provide my honest opinion to potential future guests
