Clarance hôtel

It’s an old and dated but clean hotel. I especially liked that they provided slippers. However, I remember having to carry around a big key instead of a card key.

We had a short two-day trip to Lille. A nice stroll to the main city square from this hotel is only about 10 mins. You are surrounded by eateries and shops. Check in was smooth with excellent service. However, I would ask for a room that does not face rue de la Barre because it was too noisy at night. Someone had a party that went on till 230 am with people sitting on the street right under our room and loud music. We called reception and explained and she was nice enough to give us access to another room that was away from the noise (a much smaller room) as a temporary solution. And by the way we were told the hotel can't complain even if it is noisy at 2 am. But know that giving us a spare room to sleep will not be possible if the hotel is full. Finally, not all rooms have air conditioning and we had a heat wave and the room was unbearably hot, even at night. And this was part of the reason why it was so noisy because the room was so hot you had to leave the windows open. This obviously will not be a problem in the winter or cooler months but the noise issue still needs to be addressed. We didn't not eat at the hotel because we were so tired from the night before.

This is a lovely hotel that presents as five star but serves like a two star. We experienced repeated frustrations with forgetful staff and cleanliness that was not ideal. Our request for extra pillows was forgotten. Our room had a small balcony which had spider webs all over and bird poop on the glass railing. Despite telling an employee, it was never cleaned. We asked the concierge to recommend a fine restaurant and a day later he had not gotten back to us. We were sweltering in our room and asked for a blanket and sheet instead of the overweight comforter. The maid took the comforter and brought a wool blanket with no sheet nor cover. Even with a request to the front desk staff, we could never get what we needed and went back to the comforter, with A/C turned down low. Turn down service was a total joke. They could not have spent more than 3 minutes. All they did was close drapes and turn down the corners of our comforter. They did not remove dirty teacups and used tea bags. Our shower towels remained draped on the tub where we dropped them. They did nothing! A motion activated stairway light in our two story suite got stuck on all night, disturbing our sleep, and required a maintenance man to turn off the next day. This place is lovely but they just don't have it together.

We plan to come back for a longer stay within a few months, that says everything we think. The hotel was splendid, and the diner was top gastronomy!

Clarance Hotel Lille presents itself as a luxurious 5-star establishment, but behind the polished image lies a deeply troubling reality. Despite its prestige, the hotel has a history of not paying its employees their full salaries, forcing staff to repeatedly chase payments just to receive what they are rightfully owed. This isn’t a one-time issue — several individuals who have worked here describe the same pattern: delayed payments, partial salaries, and a culture where staff are treated with disrespect and disregard, as if their work has no value. It borders on exploitation. No matter how elegant the decor or how refined the service appears on the surface, a hotel that treats its team like this cannot be trusted. True luxury is not only about the guest experience — it’s also about integrity, fairness, and how people are treated behind the scenes. Until Clarance Hotel Lille pays all outstanding wages and changes the way it treats its staff, I cannot in good conscience recommend this establishment.
