We had the good fortune to enjoy several days recently in the Loch Lein Country House Hotel in Fossa near Killarney. It would be presumptuous for me to claim that this hotel is the best we have ever stayed in during our travels over many years world-wide but it would be less than fair if we failed to admit that we have never been better anywhere. Owners Annette’s and Paul’s warmth of welcome, and their ever-present all-embracing service, which continued throughout our stay, immediately made us feel at home, delighted that we had been advised to spend time with them. The hotel has a spacious car park bordering a carefully manicured garden and lawn perfectly situated overlooking Lough Lein and the distant McGillicuddy Reeks. It has about 25 beautifully furnished, appealing, spacious bedrooms, a very comfortable lounge and a well stocked bar. The intimacy of this hotel, frequently lacking in larger establishments, resulted in quickly made enjoyable friendships which enhanced our stay. The freshly cooked, to order, appetising meals, from appealing, extensive breakfast and dinner menus, in addition to a selection of first class lounge snacks, were ever so much better than the inferior, joyless, help yourself meals, especially breakfasts, often cooked some time previously and kept warm on unhygienic hot plates, which are offered, not served, in many surprisingly well reported hotels. The attractive Irish town, Killarney, lies only a few miles away and the renowned Ring of Kerry and a setting for ‘Ryan’s Daughter’, the Dingle Peninsula, both also well worthy of visits, are readily accessible. This is not just a hotel anyone could enjoy winding down and relaxing in for a few days but is central to some of the best that Ireland has to offer. We hope to return there as soon as we can and would recommend others to follow our example
