The village is built across the beach, and there are many wonderful and quiet beaches around it. The nature around is beautiful with the southern Cretan Sea, the mountain side, and the natural forest on the north. You can also have the possibility to visit three traditional Cretan villages, and two archeological places in the village (the Minoan and the Greek Roman villa). Beaches: There are five separate beaches in the immediate Makri Gialos area. The main beach, which is blue flag accredited and which stretches eastwards from the harbour for half a mile, provides golden sand and safe shallow bathing. There is on offer a range of water sports facilities in the summer season. Nightlife: Makri Gialos is one of the quieter, less developed destinations in Crete, more suited to couples and families. Contemporary culture is represented by timeless traditional Cretan villages, such as Pefki and Agios Stefanos, which dot the mountain sides.Walking: With coastline to the south and mountains to the north, there are plenty of opportunities to explore. About 11 miles from Makri Gialos, and at 4500 feet the highest peak in the area, Afendis Stavromenos affords stunning views of eastern Crete and can only be reached on foot or by 4x4.
