This is a wonderful hotel to stay in when in the Douro Valley. The view from the veranda is absolutely breathtaking. We enjoyed walking down through the vineyard to the small town of Pinhao. The hosts of the hotel and staff are very welcoming, we felt we were treated as long lost family. We were given suggestions and recommendations for things to do, but honestly, just sitting on the veranda with a glass of wine is perfection

The hotel was in a beautiful location, with stunning views of the river, valley and mountains below. The facility combined the elegance of an historic residence, almost palace-like and a comfortable, welcoming home. Bernardo, the owner explained the history of the residence, which has been in his family since the 1700s. The furnising and art work in the common areas were museum quality. Notwithstanding the beauty of the property what made it special was the welcoming hospitality of the owner. Bernardo made you feel like you were guests not in hotel but his home. A highlight was the family style dinners where all the hotel guests sat together and engaged in stimulating and fun conversation. Bernardo also has extensive local knowledge and was able to recommend the best vineyards, boat rides, hikes and other activities. It was really one of the best, if not the best hotel experiences I have ever had in decades of international travel. A can't miss destination.

This was my favorite stay during a two week visit to Lisbon, Porto, and the Douro River valley. Casal de Loivos is high in the hills of the Douro vineyard country. The guesthouse is small and lovingly operated, with guests treated as visiting family. The rooms opened onto a large veranda with a spectacular view, and it was a treat just to relax with a book and glass of wine in such beautiful surroundings. We also had time for an olive oil and wine tasting nearby. Dinner was family style with delicious food, local wines, and of course a glass of port. We were eight for dinner, a very international mix, and the conversation was friendly and engaging. Wish we could have stayed another night!

A wonderfully situated place with amazing views of the Douro valley. We were welcomed in and given a quick tour, explaining the property and its history of being in the same family for 200+ years . Our room was well appointed with a comfortable bed, it had patio doors leading out onto the veranda with seating to enjoy the views. The evening meal was with the other guests at a communal dining table, interesting conversation , the food was high standard , beautifully presented and explained, well worth the 40 Euro each. Breakfast was a simpler affair, fresh standard continental. If self driving make sure you come up the fairly straight track at the rear of the hill , not the “locals” track your GPS will try and send you up!

Our stay here was away beyond what we expected. This place is so beautiful, the staff is super friendly, they treated us like family. The sunset view was amazing. We woke up above the clouds, literally. It was so peaceful. This was one of the best experiences we had in Portugal. They also serve a communal dinner; however, we didn’t try it because we had to confirm 48 hours before, and that point we didn’t know what we wanted to have, but next time we will for sure. Everything was perfect. I recommend you to stay here.

Words can not describe this property, it’s location nor it’s wonderful staff - perfection!!! Bernardo and his family welcome you with open arms and huge smiles and ensure your time in the Duoro valley is perfection! Everyone went above and beyond to ensure even the smallest detail was not overlooked, right down to offering to pick us up in the middle of the night, if a taxi could not be found further up the valley!
