Wong Auditorium USC School of Architecture As part of Material Acts: Experimentation in Architecture and Design Hosted by Craft Contemporary and USC School of Architecture Our built environment is the physical stage on which all human stories are lived out. This physical stage is the historical and ongoing manifestation of human imagination operating within real (or, imaginary!) constraints. Anupama Kundoo advances the idea that architectural imagination must transcend design and enter the realms of materials science and economics where some of the bigger questions reside. She will discuss the thrust of her inquiries which have been to find practical ways to fulfill the universal human aspiration for refuge, purpose, and social engagement through extensive material research and experimentation. She will discuss 'Human Time as a Resource' in the quest for new materiality and critically examine the way the time value of money has nudged us towards code-based design and the industrialized production of building components and, sometimes, even entire buildings themselves. She will discuss materiality and consumption of finite natural resources alongside their impact on human wellbeing and human resourcefulness. The act of building produces knowledge just as the resulting knowledge produces buildings. About Anupama Kundoo Anupama Kundoo graduated from University of Mumbai in 1989 and received her PhD degree from TU Berlin in 2008. Her research-oriented practice started in 1990 in Auroville has generated people centric architecture based on spatial and material research for low environmental impact while being socio-economically beneficial. Her body of works was recently exhibited as a solo show 'Taking Time' at Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark. She has taught Architecture and Urban Management at various international universities strengthening her expertise in rapid urbanization and climate change related development issues including at the University of Queensland at Brisbane, TU Stuttgart, and Columbia University. She is currently Professor of Architecture at T.U. Berlin, and the Norman Foster visiting Professor at Yale University. Kundoo received the RIBA Charles Jencks award for her contribution to architectural theory, the 2021 Auguste Perret Prize for architectural technology, the 2021 Building Sense Now global award of the German Sustainable Building Council DGNB, and the Global Award for Sustainable architecture under UNESCO patronage in 2022. Her studios are based in Berlin in Germany, and Mumbai and Pondicherry in India. Kundoo’s rigorous research and experimentation in new materiality for architecture is the result of questioning basic assumptions, construction habits that humanity has adopted during the long process of industrialization. Rather than focusing on shortage, she sought abundance through investing in human resources and human resourcefulness, such as ingenuity, time, skills, care and sense of community. MATERIAL ACTS This lecture is organized as part of Material Acts: Experimentation in Architecture and Design, and is hosted by Craft Contemporary and USC School of Architecture as part of the regional initiative Getty PST ART: Art and Science Collide. The exhibition Material Acts: Experimentation in Architecture and Design examines the role of nature as a starting point for material experimentation in the domains of architecture, craft, and science. While nature has often stood in as a model, metaphor, or resource for designers, the recent global upheavals in climate, ecology, and technology are driving intensive understandings of nature’s tangible and imagined substrate. The exhibition examines how contemporary design practices mobilize, confound, and generate natures, whether through simulating mechanics or growing biological matter. 우리가 방문했을 때 마침 대학생들의 입장 시간이었고, 성공적으로 차를 몰고 캠퍼스 주차장에 들어갈 수 있기까지 오랜 시간 줄을 서서 기다려야 했습니다. 내부에는 방문할 건물이 많이 있으며, 가장 유명한 건물은 아마도 곰 동상과 뒤로 떨어지는 폭포일 것입니다. 하지만 이번에는 자세한 조사가 이뤄지지 않아 마치 미국 명문학교의 분위기를 이리저리 돌아다니는 느낌에 가까웠다. 캠퍼스 내 상점에서는 일부 주변 제품도 판매하므로 필요한 경우 구입할 수 있습니다.

        1955년에 개장한 이 테마파크는 본질적으로 행복 공장입니다. 잠자는 숲속의 공주 성의 아치형 통로를 걷다 보면 달러, 네온 불빛, 산업 향수로 지어진 유토피아에 발을 들여놓는 것과 같습니다.  

       &quot;스타워즈: 갤럭시 엣지&quot; 구역은 가장 비싼 판타지 영역입니다. 밀레니엄 팔콘 조종석의 버튼은 불안할 정도로 실제 같고, 외계인 복장을 한 직원들의 클링온어 같은 인사를 들으면 마치 아주 먼 은하계에 있는 것 같은 착각이 들 정도입니다. 이에 비해 &quot;It&#39;s a Small World&quot;의 기계 인형 퍼레이드는 달콤한 정신적 오염처럼 느껴진다. 반복해서 재생되고 3시간이 지난 지금도 뇌에서 자동으로 재생되는 동요 말이다.  

         야간 크루즈는 마법이 일어나는 순간입니다. 전자식 수레가 미국 메인 스트리트를 밝히고, 잠자는 숲속의 공주 성 위에서 미키 마우스 모양의 폭죽이 터지면, 가장 세련된 어른들조차도 동공이 확장된 아이로 변할 것입니다. 이것이 바로 디즈니의 가장 똑똑한 디자인입니다. 놀이기구를 판매하는 것이 아니라, &quot;마법을 믿는 것&quot;이라는 일시적인 정신 상태를 판매합니다. 화요일에 가는 것을 추천합니다. 사람이 별로 없을 때, 인형 의상을 입은 배우들이 몰래 벽에 기대어 숨을 돌리는 모습을 볼 수 있는데, 이것이 동화 왕국에서 가장 현실적인 순간입니다.

좋아요, 오늘은 사람이 많았어요. 학교 단체가 많았어요. 그리고, 우리가 도착했을 때 다음 티켓은 2시간 후에 예약이 되었어요. 1인당 18달러, 주차비로 15달러가 더 들었어요. 제 생각엔 꽤 좋은 경험이었어요. 이런 것들이 흥미로웠기 때문에 기다리는 게 전혀 불편하지 않았어요. 하지만 사람이 많긴 해요.

그리피스 천문대: 별과 지구가 만나는 곳

       1935년에 완공된 이 아르데코 건물은 할리우드 언덕에 거대한 천문 기구가 로스앤젤레스 분지를 향해 겨누고 있는 것처럼 매달려 있습니다. 자유롭고 개방적인 환경 덕분에 이곳은 도시에서 가장 넓은 관람 플랫폼이 되었습니다.  

       주 전시장의 푸코 진자는 가장 철학적인 작품입니다. 황동 망치는 별자리 지도 바닥에 천천히 변화하는 궤적을 그렸고, 지구의 자전이라는 물리적 사실을 조용히 증명했습니다. 지하에서 테슬라 코일 쇼가 진행되는 동안 돔에서 인공 번개가 터지면서 과학적 시연이 현대의 마법 쇼로 바뀌었습니다. 하지만 진짜 영혼은 밤에 옥상에 있습니다. 도시의 불빛이 발밑에서 마그마처럼 퍼지고, 육안으로 볼 수 있는 은하수가 머리 위에 걸려 하늘과 인간 사이에 터무니없는 싸움이 벌어지는 것입니다.  

       일몰 1시간 전에 도착하는 것이 좋습니다. 먼저, 서쪽 테라스에서 할리우드 간판에 황금빛으로 물드는 태양을 감상한 다음, 해질녘에 천체 망원경을 만져보기 위해 줄을 서세요. 줄을 선 커플, 삼각대를 든 사진작가, 별을 세는 아이들 등이 망원경의 금속 케이스에 겹쳐진 실루엣을 비춘다. 이는 천체 자체보다 더 관찰할 만한 가치가 있을지도 모른다. 떠날 때 그리스 극장 스타일의 돔을 다시 한번 둘러보는 것을 잊지 마세요. 아인슈타인의 청동상은 현관 그늘 속에서 미소를 짓고 있는데, 마치 인류가 우주에 얼마나 집착하는지 이미 다 알고 있는 듯하다.
