Oxy Live! Presents: A Conversation with Julie Mehretu

Join Occidental College in Los Angeles for a captivating conversation with Julie Mehretu, a world-renowned painter and MacArthur Fellow. This event is part of the Oxy Live! series, which showcases cultural luminaries at the forefront of their fields. The discussion will be hosted by the esteemed interviewer and cultural interlocutor, Paul Holdengräber.

Julie Mehretu, based in New York City, is a highly acclaimed artist whose work has been exhibited in prestigious museums such as the Smithsonian, LACMA, MOMA, The Broad, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Her paintings, drawings, and prints depict the transformative impact of urban sociopolitical changes. As the top-selling African artist of all time according to Sotheby's (2023), Mehretu's influence has been recognized by Time magazine, which included her in its 100 Most Influential People list in 2020.

Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Mehretu's art is featured in collections worldwide. She is the recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship (2005) and the U.S. Department of State Medal of Arts (2015). Mehretu is a member of prestigious institutions such as the American Academy of Arts and Letters, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and National Academy of Design. Additionally, her artwork will be on display at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in June 2024, as part of BMW's curated artist program.

The conversation with Julie Mehretu will take place at Occidental College's Choi Auditorium, located at 1600 Campus Road, Los Angeles, CA 90041 on February 21, 2024.
