South Asian communities have long shaped and enriched British culture — from the rhythms of our music to the spice in our kitchens, the bold colours of our fashion to the stories we carry across generations.
Freespill return to GemArts Masala Festival for an electrifying evening of spoken word poetry, celebrating what it means to be boldly and unapologetically South Asian. Expect raw, powerful, and uplifting performances exploring identity, heritage, resistance, and joy.
Hosted by Newcastle’s very own Tahmina Ali, the night will feature a dynamic mix of local talent and national voices, including this year’s headline act Shareefa Energy, whose work fuses activism with lyrical depth.
This year’s event will also feature a special Thresholds Segment, spotlighting poetry from Thresholds — a groundbreaking new anthology published by Butcher’s Dog and co-edited by Tahmina Ali and Jo Clement. The anthology celebrates the voices of South Asian women poets from the North East, including new work from the editors and contributors.

더럼에서 북쪽으로 버스를 타고 뉴캐슬에 도착했는데, 더럼 빌리지에 비하면 뉴캐슬은 대도시이고, 더럼 기차역에서는 저녁 식사를 위해 뉴캐슬로 갔던 몇몇 학생들도 만났습니다. 여기서 나는 실제로 성벽인 하드리아누스 성벽을 보았습니다. 사실 이것은 로마 제국의 영국 지방의 최북단 국경이었습니다. 둘 다 북쪽의 침략을 방어하는 성벽이었습니다. 타인 강을 따라 서쪽에서 동쪽으로 바다의 입구가 있습니다. 당시 영국 왕은 나무 첨탑의 본관과 흙으로 된 외벽으로 구성된 성을 여러 개 지었습니다. 뉴캐슬은 뉴캐슬이라는 이름의 유래이다.

버킹엄 궁에서 가까운 곳. 여러 동물들을 볼수 있다. 팰리컨, 백조, 흑조, 거위,  기러기, 다람쥐 등등놀이터도 특색있고 좋다.
