Dr. Esther da Costa Meyer, a Visiting Professor at the Yale University School of Architecture, will be presenting an insightful discussion on the architecture of refugee camps. This thought-provoking event, titled "IN PERSON: Dr. Esther da Costa Meyer on the Architecture of Refugee Camps," will shed light on the correlation between colonialism and asylum seekers, highlighting how many refugees attempting to reach Europe originate from former colonies. A key focus will be on the vast size of these camps, which often resemble cities, and are predominantly located in the Global South. Managed by humanitarian agencies and NGOs, these camps face immense challenges due to the increasing number of refugees, exacerbated by the effects of climate change. Tragically, the provision of humanitarian aid often perpetuates neo-colonial practices. Nevertheless, a dedicated group of architects recognize the importance of involving refugees themselves, their knowledge, and their heritage in the design of shelter. This event, held in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial, will take place at The Arts Club of Chicago, located at 201 East Ontario Street, Chicago, IL 60611, on October 5, 2023.
