Feminism Meets Art History 1944/2024 is an upcoming research seminar organized by the Paul Mellon Centre. The event will feature a thought-provoking presentation by Griselda Pollock, Professor Emerita of Social and Critical Histories of Art at the University of Leeds. The seminar will delve into the intriguing story of Helen Rosenau, a Jewish refugee and feminist social historian of art, who revolutionized the field of art history in 1944 with her groundbreaking book, "Woman in Art". This remarkable publication offered a fresh perspective by examining the role of women as a symbolic form in art, challenging conventional narratives and incorporating artworks by both women and men. Surprisingly, just six years later, Ernst Gombrich, a Viennese refugee, presented a frauen-rein (women-free) "story" of artists, highlighting a contradiction in the field. Griselda Pollock will explore the reasons behind this historical amnesia and the subsequent failure to acknowledge Rosenau's significant contributions. By examining the rich feminist context surrounding Rosenau's work, Pollock aims to restore the cultural analysis chain that has been broken over time. This research seminar promises to shed light on the complexities of feminist thinking about art and culture and the challenges faced when writing inclusive and self-challenging histories. Griselda Pollock, renowned for her expertise in feminist art history and cultural analysis, was awarded the Holberg Prize in 2020 and the CAA Lifetime Achievement Award for Writing on Art in 2023. The seminar will take place at the Paul Mellon Centre in London on January 24, 2024, and will also be available online. Admission to this fascinating event is free.
