Sharon Johnston, FAIA will present selections of current and past work from Johnston Marklee’s diverse portfolio, discussed in the context of arts and culture institutions and their relationship with the fabric and program of cities. She will explore the relationship of architecture and urbanism through case studies that demonstrate the integration of cultural projects. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A moderated by Nader Tehrani. Johnston Marklee’s body of work is a model for breaking down boundaries between art and the public to design cultural institutions that engage communities in multi-faceted contexts, from large scale events and exhibitions to more intimate spaces for social engagement and repose. Since its establishment in 1998, Johnston Marklee has been recognized nationally and internationally with over 50 major awards. A book on the work of the firm, entitled, HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE IS A HOUSE, was published by Birkhauser in 2016, and monographs include: 2G N. 67, El Croquis N. 198, and A+U N. 614. Sharon has taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design as Professor in Practice, Princeton University, the University of California, Los Angeles; and has held the Cullinan Chair at Rice University and the Frank Gehry International Chair at the University of Toronto. In 2019, Sharon was named Architectural Record’s Women in Architecture: New Generation Leader. Projects undertaken by Johnston Marklee are diverse in scale and type, spanning fourteen countries throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Recent projects include the new, permanent home for the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Independent Study Program (ISP) at Roy Lichtenstein Studio in New York’s Greenwich Village; the exhibition design for the upcoming Smithsonian Design Triennial, Making Home, opening at Cooper Hewitt on November 2, 2024; the UCLA Graduate Art Studios campus in Culver City, California; and the Menil Drawing Institute in Houston, Texas. Current projects include a renovation of the UCLA Reverend James Lawson Jr. Worker Justice Center in Los Angeles; two residential towers, Ray Nashville, in Tennessee, and Ray Phoenix, in Arizona; and the interior architecture and museology within the Kunstmuseum Hauptbau in Basel, Switzerland, in collaboration with Christ & Gantenbein. The firm’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Menil Collection, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, and the Architecture Museum of TU Munich. Together with partner Mark Lee, Sharon was the Artistic Director of the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial.

메트로폴리탄 미술관: 인류 문명의 시작

        13만 제곱미터에 달하는 면적을 자랑하는 이 거대한 미로는 뉴욕 스카이라인보다 더 웅장한 풍경을 숨기고 있습니다. 그리스와 로마 전시관에서 시간 여행을 시작하는 것이 좋습니다. 햇살이 유리 돔을 통해 기원전 6세기의 대리석 조각상으로 비치고, 신들의 근육질 몸매가 아직도 살아 있는 듯합니다.  

        이집트관의 덴두르 신전은 가장 숨 막힐 듯 아름답습니다. 기원전 15세기에 지어진 이 사원은 1965년에 한 미국 거물에 의해 전체적으로 이곳으로 옮겨졌습니다. 지금은 인공 연못에 잠겨 있습니다. 수면에는 현대 관광객의 모습이 반사되어 시간과 공간이 터무니없이 겹쳐져 보인다. 2층 아시아 전시관의 &#39;약사불경 화신도&#39; 앞에는 언제나 사려 깊은 동양인의 얼굴이 앉아 있고, 미국관 안뜰의 티파니 스테인드글라스 창문 아래에는 언제나 인터넷 스타들이 셀카를 찍고 있다.  

        진짜 마법은 문 닫기 30분 전에 일어납니다. 군중이 흩어지면, 텅 빈 유럽 회화 갤러리에서 반 고흐의 자화상과 단둘이 있을 수 있으며, 황혼 무렵 캔버스에 그려진 왜곡된 붓놀림이 점차 깨어나는 모습을 볼 수 있습니다. 제안된 티켓 가격인 25달러는 좋은 거래입니다. 여기서는 입장권을 사는 것이 아니라, 3000년 인류 문명을 위한 야간 비행 허가증을 사는 것입니다.

        프랑스가 기증한 이 청동 조각상은 오랫동안 뉴욕에서 가장 비싼 엽서가 되었습니다. 리버티 섬 근처에서 붐비는 페리를 타면 여신의 녹슨 녹청이 햇빛에 반짝이는 것을 볼 수 있습니다. 두께가 0.125인치인 산화막으로, 마치 미국 꿈의 표면에 있는 시간의 확실한 녹청과 같습니다.  

        대관식에 참석하는 경험은 은유로 가득 차 있습니다. 354개의 나선형 계단을 오르는 과정은 새로운 이민자들의 투쟁사와 매우 흡사합니다. 올라갈수록 공간은 점점 좁아지고, 마침내 왕관에 있는 25개의 작은 창문을 통해 바라보면 맨해튼 스카이라인이 조각조각으로 쪼개집니다. 받침대 위의 &quot;새로운 거인&quot; 시 기념비 앞에서는 다양한 국가의 관광객들이 &quot;귀찮은 것을 내게 줘&quot;라는 시와 함께 차례로 사진을 찍었고, 보안 검색대 줄에 늘어선 유모차의 수는 이민 이야기가 아직도 쓰여지고 있음을 암시했습니다.  

        가장 감동적인 순간은 황혼 무렵이다. 해가 저물어 횃불이 황금빛으로 물들자, 크루즈 선박의 색소폰 연주자가 &quot;아름다운 미국&quot;을 연주하기 시작했습니다. 이때 여신은 등을 돌리고 월스트리트를 바라보며 대서양을 바라보고 있습니다. 이 자세는 137년 동안 유지되어 왔으며, 이것이 환영인지 작별인지는 불분명합니다.

        86층에 위치한 야외 전망대는 이 호텔의 진짜 영혼입니다. 맨해튼에 얇은 안개가 감돌면, 1931년에 노동자들이 왜 목숨을 걸고 이곳에서 일했는지 갑자기 이해하게 됩니다. 이 높이에서 내려다보면 센트럴 파크는 에메랄드색 종이추로 변하고, 이스트 강의 페리는 빛나는 딱정벌레로 변합니다. 102층에 있는 전면 유리로 된 전망실은 달콤한 현기증을 선사합니다. 발 밑의 투명한 바닥을 통해 엘리베이터 샤프트는 바닥이 없는 심연처럼 보여 다리가 풀립니다.  

        오후 3시에 입장하는 것이 좋습니다. 먼저 로비에서 호일로 양각된 별자리 돔을 감상한 다음, 일몰 전에 최상층에 도착하세요. 크라이슬러 빌딩의 첨탑에 지는 석양을 바라보며, 그림자가 길어져 허드슨 강에 비춰지는 순간, 뉴욕에 대한 모든 상상이 충족될 것입니다. 떠날 때 북쪽 벽에 있는 &quot;건축가 명예의 전당&quot;을 만지는 것을 잊지 마세요. 대공황 시대에 기적을 창조한 노동자들은 강철보다 항상 더 기억될 가치가 있을 것입니다.
