Joanna Choi Kalbus, author of "The Boat Not Taken" | Orinda Books
May 8, 2025(UTC-8)
오린다
Spanning the 20th century and two continents, Kalbus shares her experience during Korea’s turbulent history and the story of immigrating with her mother to mid-20th century California, a land where the streets were supposedly paved with gold, but where the reality was one of hardship, poverty, and anti-Asian discrimination. This lyrical and often humorous memoir, told in brief, gemlike chapters, is the tale of an observant girl determined to excel. It’s also the story of divided Korea, colonized by Japan and devastated by civil war with consequences for families that reverberate today. Above all, The Boat Not Taken is a love letter to an extraordinary mother: a daughter of rural Korean gentry and an independent widow fiercely devoted to her daughter but hiding a secret so shocking that, once it was uncovered, shook her child’s sense of identity. Joanna Choi Kalbus was born in North Korea. She made two critical migrations: from North Korea to South Korea after the Communist takeover, and then to the United States as 10-year-old during the Korean War. She pursued her education in the U.S., obtaining a PhD in Educational Administration, and has been involved in education for 35 years.

Robert Aquinas McNally, author of CAST OUT OF EDEN | Orinda Books
Oct 5, 2024(UTC-8)ENDED

John Muir is widely and rightly lauded as the nature mystic who added wilderness to the United States’ vision of itself, largely through the system of national parks and wild areas his writings and public advocacy helped create. That vision, however, came at a cost: the conquest and dispossession of the tribal peoples who had inhabited and managed those same lands, in many cases for millennia. Muir argued for the preservation of wild sanctuaries that would offer spiritual enlightenment to the conquerors, not to the conquered Indigenous peoples who had once lived there. “Somehow,” he wrote, “they seemed to have no right place in the landscape.” Cast Out of Eden tells this neglected part of Muir’s story—from Lowland Scotland and the Wisconsin frontier to the Sierra Nevada’s granite heights and Alaska’s glacial fjords—and his take on the tribal nations he encountered and embrace of an ethos that forced those tribes from their homelands. Although Muir questioned and worked against Euro-Americans’ distrust of wild spaces and deep-seated desire to tame and exploit them, his view excluded Native Americans as fallen peoples who stained the wilderness’s pristine sanctity. Fortunately, in a transformation that a resurrected and updated Muir might approve, this long-standing injustice is beginning to be undone, as Indigenous nations and the federal government work together to ensure that quintessentially American lands from Bears Ears to Yosemite serve all Americans equally. Robert Aquinas McNally is a freelance writer and editor based in Concord, California. He is the author of nine books, including The Modoc War: A Story of Genocide at the Dawn of America’s Gilded Age (Nebraska, 2021).

Cities and infrastructures have been destroyed, and the natural world has reclaimed the landscape in surprising ways, with herds of wild camels roaming the American West and crocodiles that glow neon green lurking in the rivers. Will Collins, the last surviving resident of a Buddhist retreat center in Colorado, receives an urgent and mysterious request: to deliver a potential cure to a scientist on the West Coast. So Will sets out into an unknown and perilous world, haunted by dreams of the woman he once loved, in a rusted-out pickup pulled by two mules. He doesn't have much time--temperatures are rising to lethal heights, a hit man is on his tail, and armed militias patrol the roads. The only way he'll make it is with the help of a clever raven, an opinionated cat, and a tough teenage girl who has learned to survive on her own. A highly original contribution to the canon of dystopian literature, The Way is a thrilling and imaginative novel, full of warmth, wisdom, and surprises. It raises age-old questions about life, death, and how to live, while reflecting our own world in unsettling, uncanny, and even hopeful ways. Cary Groner's debut novel, Exiles, published in 2011, was a Chicago Tribune favorite book of the year. His award-winning stories have appeared in publications including Glimmer Train, Salamander, Sycamore Review, American Fiction, Southern California Review, and Mississippi Review. He lives with his wife in the San Francisco Bay Area.

This is Jasmine Guillory at her best. She has outdone herself. Taylor and Avery Forever. Absolutely one of the most fun rom coms of the year! —Taylor Jenkins Reid, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Carrie Soto Is Back About the Book: Avery Jensen is almost thirty, fresh off a breakup, and she’s tired of always being so uptight and well-behaved. She wants to get a hobby, date around (especially women), flirt with everyone she sees, wear something not from the business casual section of her closet—all the fun stuff normal people do in their twenties. One problem: Avery doesn’t know where to start. She doesn't have a lot of dating experience, with men or women, and despite being self-assured at work, she doesn't have a lot of confidence when it comes to romance. Enter Taylor Cameron, Napa Valley's biggest flirt and champion heartbreaker. Taylor just broke up with her most recent girlfriend, and her best friend bet her that she can’t make it until Labor Day without sleeping with someone. (Two whole months? Without sex? Taylor?!?!) So, she offers to give Avery flirting lessons. It should keep her busy and stop her from texting people she shouldn't. And it might take her mind off how inadequate she feels compared to her friends, who all seem much more settled and adult than Taylor. At first, Avery is stiff and nervous, but Taylor is patient and encouraging, and soon, Avery looks forward to their weekly lessons. With Taylor’s help, Avery finally has the life she always wanted. The only issue is: now she wants Taylor. Their attraction becomes impossible to ignore, despite them both insisting to themselves and everyone else that it isn't serious. When Taylor is forced to confront her feelings for Avery, she doesn't know what to do—and most importantly, if she's already ruined the best thing she’s ever had. Jasmine Guillory is a New York Times bestselling author; her novels include The Wedding Date, the Reese's Book Club selection The Proposal, and By The Book. Her work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Cosmopolitan, Bon Appetit, and Time, and she is a frequent book contributor on The Today Show. She lives in Oakland, California. Maggie Tokuda-Hall has an MFA in creative writing from the University of San Francisco and a strong cake-decorating game. She is the author of the young adult novel The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea, an indie bestseller and recipient of the Northern California Book Award in Children’s Literature, as well as the picture book Also an Octopus, illustrated by Benji Davies, which won a Parents’ Choice Gold Award.
