도쿄에 오면 절대 빼놓을 수 없다는 츠키지 시장을 마지막날 첫번째 일정으로 잡았다. 츠키지시장은 1920년대부터 도쿄는 물론 일본의 최대 어시장 공급처로서 생동감 넘치는 분위기를 느낄 수 있는 곳이라고 들었다. 다만 2018년경부터는 도요스 어시장으로 장소 이전이 결정된 만큼 참치경매 등 주요 시장은 도요스에만 열리고, 츠키지는 일종의 장외어시장으로서 몇몇 음식점만 남아있다고 했다. 그래서 내심 걱정했으나, 검색 결과 여전히 많은 맛집이 있었고, 특히 스시쿠니의 우니동(성게알 덮밥)이 유명했다. 츠키지시장은 통상 오전 8시쯤 도착하면 가게가 하나 둘 문을 열고, 9~10시에 대부분의 가게가 영업을 시작한다. 츠키지 시장에 도착해서 이런저런 구경도 하고 그토록 유명한 계란말이도 먹으면서(정말 입에서 녹는다) 아침인 스시쿠니를 기다렸다. 스시쿠니라는 맛집은 오전10시 오픈이지만, 1시간 이상 대기하지 않으려면 적어도 9시 20분에는 줄을 서는게 좋다. 나는 줄을 9시 10분경 섰는데 이미 5팀 정도 줄을 서고 있었고, 10여분이 지나자 어느새 뒤로 줄이 길게 늘어서 있었다. 최대 10팀 정도를 수용할 수 있는 작은 가게였기에 줄을 먼저 서는게 나중 일정을 제대로 즐기기 위해서도 권하는 바이다.
