The largest cathedral in Korea, this is a main spot in Myeong-dong. Walk a block from the bustling shopping district and you'll be in the calm recluse of this Catholic church. The growth of Catholicism has an interesting history in the Republic and some of the paintings inside depict the early martyrs of the late 19th century. The current Pope has been here. There's a little gift shop and garden in the back worth exploring.
Myeondong Cathedral is the very first Catholic church in Korea. It is situated in the heart of downtown Seoul, is both the Cathedral Church for the Archdiocese of Seoul and has become a symbol of the presence of the Catholic Church in Korea. You can see the unique alter for the first Korean Priest. The painting on the wall about the early missionary period is quite stunning.
