The most distinctive sign on the square is a Gothic building built in Victorian times - the city hall built in 1887. It occupies a small area and is small in size. It is 286 feet high and costs 1 million pounds. It is an old but intact Gothic building. The city hall was open to the public, and we left our credentials and went in for a visit. The city hall is divided into old and new parts. The office space is in the new city hall. The old city hall is now used as a place for banquets and exhibitions. The old city hall has four floors and is a Gothic building. The new town hall has nine floors. The old and new city halls are joined together. The buildings are of the same color and style. On each side of the old city hall was a white marble statue of two great scientists from Manchester. One was John & Dalton and the other was James & Joule.
