Reading the inscriptions on the tombstones here is not only a memory of the deceased, but also a review of history. Looking at those lives that lived 200 years ago, it seems to be back to that era. I uploaded a tombstone of a young Englishman who died in 1787. He traveled across the ocean to Macau with a vision of the future, but was knocked down by illness and stayed here forever. I don't know how many other people remember him.
The Christian Cemetery, formerly known as the East India Company Cemetery, can be accessed from the ruins of St. Paul's Church down the hill to the south. It is adjacent to the White Pigeon Nest Park and the Oriental Foundation. All the attractions belong to the historical buildings of "Macau Historic District" and are listed in the World Cultural Heritage Site.
Once I went there, I was not happy, but I still had an endless feeling. Next time you should go back. Enter the right-hand side of the Church of the Christian Church and come to the Protestant cemetery in Macau. The local people call it the Christian Cemetery. Among the people buried here is the Italian painter Channelly, who was one of the first people to bring Western painting techniques into China.
People with religious beliefs should visit Macau. There are many churches and they are very beautiful. The churches here are very small. But I don't know why these tombs still look very ornamental and artistic. They are not so gloomy as in China. The Christian cemeteries are buried by foreign Christians hundreds of years ago. Among them, there are Europeans, Americans, sailors, soldiers and so on. Priests... They're buried here, remembered by loved ones.
This is the resting place of Christians who have died in Macao since 1814. At that time, the law prohibited the burial of Christian remains in Catholic territory. The Chinese people also opposed this practice. It was not until 1821 when the land was bought by British Moving India Company that it became a cemetery. The cemetery here records the life and deeds of the deceased in detail, among which the famous artist George Chimmery is.
