The heart of lisbon
Region of Lisboa that's located along the beautiful coastline next to Cais do Sodre, highly vibrant district with plenty of shops and delicious foodie places even into depth of the night. I overheard a guide recommending Alfama as 'the location to go' if one was to wander around Lisboa on their own. This is also the Lisboa destination for Cascais train line, we stumbled upon Mercado da Ribeira Time Out after getting off the train and had some of the best seafood around. This is perhaps one of the very few locations in Lisboa that I seen packed with locals, definitely worth a visit. There are also a few famous Fado restaurants in this region.
You'll be staying right in the heart of this neighborhood, one of the most typical places to see in Lisbon. Alfama, whose name comes from the arabic word, meaning the fountain, is the only mediaeval quarter in Lisbon, that still keeps its old world charm. In Alfama, also traditionally known as the birthplace of the "Fado", one can have the sense of living in times gone by. It has an atmosphere of its own, still maintaining a sense of community difficult to keep in a big city. Alfama was my birthplace, and is for me one of the most magical places I know.
Whoever goes to Portugal has to visit Alfama and listen to some Fado!
