The White House was recommended to us by a family member who had already stayed there a number of times - a positive start! So when lockdown restrictions eased enough for us to have a mid-week break we booked a room at the White House in Dulcote. The White House has three distinct areas of accommodation - The Wells Suite, the Loft and The Barn - and our stay was in the Loft. The mention of a Loft might raise visions of dust, cobwebs and spiders but the name refers to its previous use not the well appointed suite that it has now become. The only reminders of its original use were the stairs up to the door and the sloping ceilings - see the photo accompanying this review. If the idea of stairs would make the Loft a challenge for you the other two accommodations are accessible at ground level and equally well appointed. In course of conversation our host - Mary Harris - said that she is more than happy to advise her guests as to which accommodation would be the best choice for their needs. The booking process was easy, and to facilitate the check in process our host asked us to pre-select our breakfast choices for the first morning; she was happy to make changes for subsequent mornings during our stay. Because of COVID social separation requirements the breakfast selection was of necessity cereal and continental style, but all served to our room with a smile every morning even when it was pouring with rain - which was pretty much every day during this stay. The White House was easy enough to find, but whilst it was a very attractive village property it didn’t have an obviously white frontage. Evidently it was originally a tavern called The White Horse, but when it was bought and converted into a private dwelling they tweaked the name, changing ‘Horse’ to ‘House’! On arrival our host gave us a warm welcome and showed us to our Loft ably assisted by her son who happily carried our case upstairs. The main room included our very comfortable double bed, what looked like a pull-out couch bed, various drawer units and of course a TV. In the adjoining room was a table and chairs, a microwave, refrigerator, tea/coffee facilities and a cupboard containing useful items including plates and cutlery. Beyond that was a spacious wet room shower area, a sink and a toilet. Overall the Loft was a spacious, tastefully appointed and comfortable area with the only issue being that it took me a while to get used to the sloping ceilings becoming lower than my forehead expected when I approached my bedside cabinet; but this was a minor distraction quickly overcome. As regards dining out, there were more than enough options for us to choose from, including a pleasant lunch in Wells which will be the subject of a separate review. Again, our host was most helpful in providing information and recommendations for the various types of food available in the area. As well as being an attractive village Dulcote is a 20-25 minute walk from Wells, across the fields via Public
