The room was a good size and quite clean. The mattresses are on hard platforms, but I found the bed comfortable and had no trouble sleeping. The air-con was very powerful. The overhead fan did not work on the first night, but after that it did ... and was more useful than the A/C on relatively cool December nights.
Points off for no desk in the room, nor even a chair. I had to drag in a plastic chair from the balcony and straddle a corner of the side table to check my email. No microwave, no in-room coffee, not even a cup for toothbrushing water (although the desk clerk was kind enough to find one for me).
Notably, the staff were uniformly friendly and helpful.
The hotel has a no-visitors policy -- or rather, they want you to pay a fee for each person you bring up. To simplify security they require guests to wear a plastic wristband for the entire duration of their stay. So anyone you meet will know where you are staying.
I did not experience any maintenance problems, although some of the electrical outlets are falling off the wall and the main staircase is progressively dirtier the closer you get to the lobby -- I guess they don't bother mopping it.
The location is six blocks of up-and-down hills, random half-meter steps, and construction-blocked sidewalks from the main street, Olas Altas. The first time I traversed this path, dragging my bag, it was hard; after that it was just tedious.
I can easily see how, 25 years ago, this place must have been fabulous.
