Booked this hotel for my 70th birthday celebrations and as part of an 18 day birthday trip around the east of Canada. Stayed in five different hotels in different locations and sadly this one - where we had my actual birthday dinner - was the weakest of them all. Positives - good location, pleasant room, excellent restaurant staff. Nice bottle of wine, and cheese and fruit tray in room upon arrival to mark my birthday. Negatives - efficient but very impersonal, unfriendly and unhelpful reception staff. Even when there were no guests at reception and given that the desk is right beside the entrance you were never greeted with a smile, a 'hello', a 'how was your day' or a 'goodbye'. When I asked one of the two receptionists on duty in an empty reception if they could please make a call to confirm an onward transport arrangement the following morning I was told, "You can use the telephone on the concierge's desk or use the one in your room." I had a mobile with me if I'd wanted to make the call myself but I wasn't sure of the national and regional codes from a UK mobile so I even gave them the number of the Canadian company to call. I ended up having to figure it out myself - very unhelpful! The a/c unit in the bedroom made the most ridiculous racket when the fan kicked in. As it was needed to maintain an even temperature during the night that meant being awakened - and I sleep very sound - every hour or so. This wasn't just a gentle hum - this was a real noise! The birthday dinner was a big disappointment and was the worst meal we had in our entire trip. I ordered medium-rare steak and my wife ordered the lamb shank. Both arrived tough, overcooked and extremely well-done. The portion sizes of everything were huge but that doesn't disguise very mediocre food quality. Sadly, the very pleasant and helpful nature of the restaurant staff was let down by the quality of the food served. This hotel has the feeling of pretentiously trying to hit well above its weight but failing in several areas.
