I chose the Bentley Hotel in Motherwell, Lanarkshire, based on a family recommendation and some mixed reviews. Despite its 3.5-star rating, the £85 per night price seemed steep for the area. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. Our room was extremely small, with an equally tiny double bed. While the room looked freshly painted and not too bad at first glance, it quickly revealed its flaws. The window view was dreadful, facing decaying wood and buildings. The carpet had no underlay, making it thin and threadbare. The bathroom was incredibly cramped, featuring a minuscule hand basin. It was full of black mildew, with decaying and rotting wood around the shower. Although the hotel advertised toiletries, there was only a single small tablet of soap. The towels were ragged and thin, and the sheets were of poor quality, with the bottom sheet not even fitting the bed. The room was furnished with two IKEA lamps and two battered bedside cabinets. The bed itself was terribly uncomfortable, feeling like concrete. On closer inspection, it turned out to be makeshift, with a plastic fabric headboard and the base was two horizontal wooden box type frames supporting a very thin old mattress. This made for an excruciatingly uncomfortable night’s sleep on a small double bed. To make matters worse, the floors creaked loudly, and from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., we could hear everyone coming in and out. This, combined with a wardrobe with a broken door and a poorly functioning kettle, left a bad impression. The hotel seemed to be run on an absolute minimum shoestring budget, and the overall quality was worse than most hostels I’ve stayed in. The TV was extremely small and did not work properly. Breakfast was passable, and generally the staff were helpful. However they were scarce and It was disconcerting that the front door appeared to be left open all night with no one at reception. Speaking with a local taxi drivers, he also gave the hotel a terrible review and said the people he picked up from there invariably complained about the hotel Bentley, further confirming our disappointment. How this hotel is rated 3.5 stars on TripAdvisor is beyond me. I cannot believe the positive reviews are authentic given our experience.
