호텔 덴 그루텐 볼삭(Den Grooten Wolsack Hotel)

Cheap hotels are fine, as long as you know what to expect. This one is cheap, and looks fine on the website, yet, I found the rooms quite shabby, with a lot of things broken, half finished and rather mouldy. There was a bible though. But instead of having god as a refuge, I'd rather stay in some other hotel next time.

Booked this place for an overnight stay on a business trip - I should not have. The location is great, BUT: calling this a 3 star HOTEL is quite an overstatement... I've stayed at plenty of B&B's which were way better for a fairer price. The room came relatively cheap at 99 EUR plus city tax (off season in February) which did not include breakfast, and based on the reviews I'm glad I did not spend the extra 16 EUR on it. The hotel has a weird layout with a separate reception and a fire-door type entry with a broken handle to some old derelict building. Conveniently located next to the Mechelen Cathedral which is nice if you don't mind listening to bells chiming every hour, right next to the main square. This is about as positive as it gets. The rooms are extremely shabby, most things are broken e.g. towel holder in the bathroom hanging halfway ripped out of the wall, some odd cabinet type contraption behind the toilet that is broken and chipped, dirty light switches from the 80's, overall broken and worn out feeling. Sinking mattress with no support, placed on top of two single beds that do not match in height and size. Flower decoration in a used wine bottle with the labels on and some sand inside. Unbearable perfume smell in the entire room which I had no idea where was coming from, so had to keep the window open in -5 °C to try to air it out and then listen to the traffic on the cobblestoned street below. Extremely rough towels that appear to have been washed a thousand times with some extra tough detergent. Plastic cups for drinking that were milky from the wear and use. Just UGH. Sheets were clean and I stayed in much worse in Belgium before, but still, not even close to a 3-star hotel. Oh, and the check in: friendly girl at the reception, took quite a while to find my reservation (booked through company booking app) which turned out they mistakenly booked for the next day. Lucky for me they had space available so at least I did not have to wonder around a strange city looking for another place to stay - but maybe this was the Universe's way of trying to warn me to back off. Next time I'll take the hint and give this place a miss.

Good location and a spacious room. However, a check out time of 10 o`clock was super early. After a debate at the reception they extended it for us until 10:30, which is still early. The internet was very poor, basically non existent in the room. 3 different networks, but no functioning Wi-Fi.

Boek hier niets! Dit hotel heeft mijn boeking voor juli dit jaar gecanceld wegens ‘onmiddellijke stopzetting hotel’. Ik had echter al betaald en heb mijn geld nog steeds niet terug, het lukt me nu niet ze te bereiken. Terwijl ze wel online zijn.

geboekt via social deal. receptiepersoneel niet echt vriendelijk en steeds met neus snuivend (ziek???) stinkende gangen in hotel. in kamer was de geur wel weg. superkleine kamer. deur van badkamer gaat niet volledig open doordat bed in de weg staat. tabletje boven wastafel = karton. Werkten niet : verluchting badkamer, ijskast, nachtlampje. sproeikop in douche heel vuil, rest van douche wel proper. bij inchecken hoorden we dat er een probleem was met de kaartjes om deur te openen. daardoor gewone sleutel meegekregen (kamer met een probleem verhuren?) ontbijt niet wauw maar oke. lift: heel vuil en lichtjes van verdiepingen branden niet!! is lift nog in orde?? perfecte ligging van hotel. enkel hotel ondermaats. we boeken eerste keer dikwijls met social deal en gaan als "gewone" klant terug als hotel oke is. hier nooit meer! verouderd hotel waar iets mooi van te maken is als met dit onderhoudt! (personeel bij ontbijt was wel supervriendelijk!)

Het hotel werd geboekt voor een overnachting omdat we in de buurt diner hadden. Bij aankomst bleek de kamer ijskoud (minder dan 16 graden). Gemeld aan receptie en men beloofde op te lossen. Bij terugkomst was de kamer nog steeds ijskoud. Helaas was er niemand meer aanwezig om dit te melden. ‘‘s ochtends was het amper 12 graden in de badkamer. Bij vertrek was de receptie nog gesloten. Het probleem werd achteraf gemeld per mail. Men doet echter de moeite niet om een antwoord te geven. Een echte afrader !

De foto's op de site laten andere dingen vermoeden dan wat je in werkelijkheid aantreft. Dit is een "hotel" of dat pretendeert het toch te zijn in het centrum van Mechelen. Toch moet je om te beginnen 7 keer bellen om binnen te geraken want de eerste 6 keer wordt je doorgeschakeld naar een gsm maar zelfs daar kom je op een voicemail terecht. Eens aangekomen moet je zien of je iemand vind want de "receptioniste" is mee tafels aan het klaarzetten. Vervolgens blijkt het onmogelijk om op om het even welke elektronische manier te betalen. Alles moet cash!?!? Wanneer je dan eindelijk de kamerdeur opent komt de geur van de afwatering ("het putteke") je tegemoet. De kast kan maar gedeeltelijk open want de tv hangt in de weg. Het "zitgedeelte" waarvan sprake op de site is één stoeltje in de hoek van de kamer. En in de badkamer is de stang voor de sproeier vol roestige vlekken. Voor de rest alles "top" 😂. Wij maakten voor 1 keer een uitzondering op onze gewoonte om bij Van Der Valk te logeren en dat zal bij 1 keer blijven.

Nooit meer. Ik heb het hotel om 4 uur in de nacht verlaten. Na een korte nacht in het meest onhygiënische bed ooit geslapen te hebben. Totale afrader ongeveer alles in het hotel is volledig afgeleefd. Het gaf me sovjet rusthuis vibes, nochtans nooit zoiets bezocht 😳
