The McWilliam Park Hotel is a top rate gem in the heart of Mayo. I found all of the staff to be genuinely friendly and helpful beyond expectations. Nothing I needed was too much trouble, from printing a work document, to organising a taxi when I had difficulty doing so myself. My room was very large and had tea/coffee (instant) making facility, ironing facility, good WiFi, a table with two chairs, a work station, and a lovely spacious bathroom. There is no fridge. The bed was comfortable, and with the window open a bit, the lovely scent of the countryside was a treat for this urban dweller. The hotel is ten minutes safe walk to the town, with pavements and zebra crossings, and two minutes from a Lidl should you need anything. An Aldi is nearby as well. But the town itself has everything you need without these large supermarkets. Claremorris is a beautiful town, well served by trains at a train station a short walk from/to main street (4 minutes). Buses were a bit more complicated to work out, so I gave up! Thus the taxi. Claremorris boasts a most envious, ambitious and impressive public park/walkway, called McMahon Park, or Clare Lake. This is a community run amenity conceived in 1988, and overseen by a voluntary group still. There are geese and ducks, swans, dozens of species of birds and trees, and a Land of the Giants looped walkway that is magical for children – of all ages! The town itself has some gems of old shops amidst the new, and has maintained the look and feel of a classic Irish town. If you want 'real' on your trip, Claremorris is the place to go, and if you want comfort and generosity of spirit, the McWilliam Park Hotel is the place to stay.
