Good colonial style rooms. Good for those looking for peace and quiet

The stay was wonderful and the staff very warm and helpful. The property is breathtakingly beautiful. Set atop a hill, it is very green and quiet. The original building which is from 1890, is a beautiful colonial structure. The highlight is that there are more than 70 peafowl on the property. The peacocks were displaying their open plumage all over. They also eat out of your hand, but don’t like being touched Downside: in spite of being a 5 star, all the rooms do not have a bathtub. Only the top level suite has a bathtub. But otherwise an ideal place if you want to relax at the hotel.

Very nice and courteous staff; morning walk is fantastic; entire surrounding is very calm and quiet. Ideal for business and pleasure trip. Breakfast variety is moderate compared to ITC. But, taste is too good. Menu should focus little bit more south Indian

The Taj in Madurai is on a hillock with green all around, particularly during the monsoons. The heritage property is in the midst of transition and when soon complete, will make it top notch. Hopefully, during my next visit the upgrades are in place. If I were to give four stars for the stay, the staff earned their all five for all-around hospitality: from Thiru. Pandian, the welcome staff Ashwini and Solemphy, Aasai Thambi, Prabhu, Eshwar and Govind with Operations, Chauffeur Jana and Malai Ramar. A recommendation for those planning their stay here, do not to take a TukTuk, as it might be taxing for it make the steep hill. A request, please give space to nature, at least to the extent that you can when you are here. Best!

There are some hotels that you have to visit yourself to truly understand their charm. I can say that Taj Gateway Madurai is one of such rare properties in India. Built in 1890, this property even predates the legendary Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai (1903) and is currently being managed/operated by IHCL. I stayed here during first week of June, 2024 for 3 days/2 nights as a retreat from the hustle-bustle of Delhi NCR and also for doing Darshan in the world-famous Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundaraswarar Temple; that is a must visit if you ever plan to come to Madurai city. Since the hotel is located on a calm hillside, there are panoramic views of the city whether from the room or from the garden outside the multi-cuisine restaurant. However, what makes it really sweet are the beautiful peacocks that roam around freely in this nature-lovers' place plus the huge trees (especially nearby pool area) that probably have lived here for decades, if not a century. My flight from Delhi was early so the hotel very kindly gave me some Chai on my arrival, knowing well of my preference and the General Manager Mr. Vishal Srivastava was there to welcome me in the lobby with a smile! :) Mr. Noor Mohammad, F&B Manager was so very forthcoming to help me plan my Darshan to Meenakshi Temple among others and took care of my custom requests (whether in room amenities or arranging hotel cabs or dining) rather promptly. On his recommendation, I even tried the cheesy omelette in breakfast and I must say it is one of the best I have ever had. Mr. Thangapandian M., Front Office Manager coordinated my arrival and gave me some much needed guidance on the local sightseeing around Madurai. Mr. Ramesh Ayyanar, Restaurant Manager provided great service during my meals alongwith his colleagues Mr. Nalaraman, Chef Raj Kumar and Chef Suresh. Chef Kumar particularly made an excellent Burger with fresh fries in the night-time! Mr. Govind from Front Office assisted me in the night and showed me around the amazing vintage coffee-table book collection that the hotel has in the lobby and conference rooms. This is an essential check if you are a book-lover like myself! Ms. Aswini from Front Office settled my checkout quickly and kept the print of my final invoice ready when I was leaving for the Madurai Airport. Special mentions for Mr. Thirupathy and Mr. Malai Ram, hotel car drivers who not only took me to my local (and far away) destinations but also acted as language interpreters when I needed to communicate locally. The hotel cars are comfortable and well-maintained, though they are available at a relatively higher cost; I am told by the hotel that they internally working to provide better rates for hotel cars in the future. I would love to visit this property again sometime, for a longer duration because I feel there was much more to explore and just to experience the fresh breath of air and the serenity that can only come living in harmony with nature and this Taj is peace personifie

We enjoyed our stay in Madurai. Our family had a wow experience with the ambiance. Wish we had spent more time. The staff was very courteous and helpful. The peacocks and their dance around the campus showed a blissful experience. The view of Madurai from the property is extra ordinary

It's a decent place, good breakfast options, however upkeep of rooms can be better. Plenty of peacocks roaming around freely is the highlight of this place. Personally I didn't had a good experience at billing where they mistakenly double charged me and then took very long to initiate the refund

The Gateway Pasumalai is a peaceful stay in jungle in heart of concrete jungle . Spread over 63 acres hilly forest and with heritage structures as old as 135 years this hotel has its own charm , you will see lot of shortcoming and challenges due to its old age but the nature and the team here makes your stay very relaxing and comfortable . Also the management has decided to upgrade the facility here to match modern age 5 star experience which is in process and hope the guest coming after Diwali will have all together new Luxary experience . We were happy to see Pandian at front office who always helps the guest with there request , also Govind was too good for the guest checking in and to give good insight into the room and views from the hotel . Even though the Resturant have limited options for food the team here did all there best to meet our request thanks to Cheaf Karthik and the team especially Venkat who was at this best to serve the guests with all the limitations the Restaurant has . Special thanks to GM VISHAL SHRIVASTAVA, for his engagement with guest and understand the area of improvement to make stay experience better , with special arrangement made for us to experience the welcome ritual at Taj Pasumalai . Overall it was very satisfying and relaxing stay on lap of nature and we are looking forward to stay in completely renovated property for a better experience in future too .
