One of the mandatory requirements of a four star hotel is working wifi in every room. As journalists it's critical that we have decent wifi and hotels are only booked if they have fully working wifi guaranteed. We've been touring northern Spain, staying in a multitude of hotels - from two to three star – and so far have only experienced perfectly working wifi in every hotel. At the Silken Monumental Naranco the wifi in our room was non-existent. Sure, there's the facility to log-in, which is the first thing my partner and I do on entering a new hotel. This was achieved – on two laptop computers – and two iPhones. However on attempting to log on to the web - on any – nothing! Same with mail servers - we had limited access to mail but could not send. Trying to log into any website resulted in the systems hanging – all four the same! After wasting a couple of hours, getting absolutely nowhere, I went down to reception - where the wifi signal and web access proved to be just about perfect. Complaints to the reception desk resulting in a call from a 'techie' – but as the issue was patently the strength of signal – this proved futile. We advised reception of this, anticipating a change of room - but nothing/nada. Our only option was to work in the reception area - which we deem unacceptable. I don't know how many rooms or floors are affected by poor wifi signals, but would strongly suggest that if wifi is critical for your visit - before you accept a room at this hotel, test out the wifi. Our room was 603 - on the sixth floor. A three-night stay at the Silken Monumental wasn't a cheap option - if we visit Oviedo again it's doubtful the Silken Monumental Naranco will be on our option list.
