로열 오크(Royal Oak)

We stayed at the Royal Oak for one night prior to catching the ferry. We cannot recommend enough. We arrived late and the kitchen staff kept the kitchen open in order to take our order for an evening meal and as we had an early morning ferry, a large takeaway breakfast bag was provided. The room was very clean and comfortable. The staff went out of their way to accommodate our every need, without having to ask. We would definitely recommend and will definitely stay there again.

Lovely little pub with rooms - idea for a cozier stay in Dover. Expect old world style and rooms - and you won’t be disappointed But they really need to get new mattresses

The location is the Hotel's biggest selling point as it is so close to the Dover Castle and the White Cliffs. The room was ok for a "base" but would not recommend it for a long stay. The food served was excellent.

Lumpy mattress,no hot food Mon-Tuesdays, no TV in the room, no desk in the room to work at, breakfast served at 8-9, not good if you’re working.

We chose to stay at the Royal Oak prior to our cruise. The hotel is situated away from the city centre in a quiet residential area steeped in history a short cab ride or 40 min walk to town. The staff exceeded our expectations with their kindness and hospitality. The pub downstairs frequented by locals and travellers was a lot of fun to have a pint, meal and watch a football match. The room met our requirements only the unseasonably warm weather made it more challenging, thankfully a fan was provided in the room. Complimentary breakfast was the perfect way to start the day.

Arrived on a Tuesday to find the kitchen was closed but thankfully you could do me a Pizza. My room was lovely but would benefit from a new mattresses and a tv would be a welcome addition. None of the above detracts from it being a lively cosy little pub and i would happily stay again.

The booking email gives you the code to enter the area with the rooms and your own room but it doesn’t tell you that you need to press a star after you entered the code so it took us a while to work it out and to enter. The car park was full when we arrived and we needed to charge our car but another car was parked in the space for electric vehicles. It was owned by one of the employers so we had to ask him to move it. When we entered room number 2, it was FREEZING! The window had been left open and even when we closed it, the glass was so thin that it felt like it was still open. One of the panels of the blind was broken and hanging. We had to hang a blanket over the blind to block the cold air coming in. With a small radiator in the room, candles we brought from home and a hot shower on, eventually the room warmed up. The water pressure in the shower is very weak so it took me a while to wash my hair to get ready for the evening. We went downstairs for dinner and they were short of staff so it took ages before someone took our order. The food was not great. Chips were fried in old oil and the burger tasted very raw. The Camembert cheese was not melted properly. The breakfast in the morning was not too bad but the one piece of toast they serve was very hard. Again, short of staff in the morning. The coffee machine was not working properly and we had to turn it on and off to get a cup of coffee. The staff are lovely and they are trying their best…

The staff are hard-working decent people. The only reason I've given 4*. The rooms are ok. Clean, with a decent bathroom and comfortable beds. Ok, there's no TV in the room, which for a solo traveller would be an added benefit. Plus, above the bar, which is a benefit to some but not if you need an early night! If you look closely, there are noticeable items that need attention... but the same with every place? The poxy key entry is a pain to work and needs getting used to. This contraption makes the place very impersonal. No, hello/goodbye/thanks for staying. For me, the parking was a problem having to park down the road on a few occasions as the parking is tiny and not for a larger car. Although minor, it caused me issues. Excellent friendly staff. Ok accommodation.
