I recently visited here with a friend, with whom I visit Tenerife quite often. We usually stay at the excellent Mencey Hotel in Santa Cruz, but fancied a change. I enjoyed my 5 days here. The staff are the hotel's heart and soul, and rise to this challenge, whether working at reception, in the restaurant / bars, in the spa. Wherever you go, you feel warmly welcomed. Special mention to the superb Antonia in the spa (I really hope this is her name - short dark hair) who is a superb and empathetic therapist. Alejandro too was excellent, giving a very powerful 'Deep' massage. The drinks are nicely mixed, and the main bar area outside is so relaxing - beautifully lit, effective fire pits and lanterns after dark, live music and great bar staff, who know their stuff. Loved the local vermin used in our *****nis! What rather lets this hotel down is the quality of the food. We opted for Half Board as the hotel is very secluded, in a good way. So, there are no other dining options. We did not like the look of the tasting menu alternative, as it didn't work for us. So, you are then in the main left with a morning and evening buffet. The omelette section was great, and made to order obviously. Great. Coffee too was nice. And a good selection of hot and cold other nibbles from hot breakfast choices, pastries, fruit and yoghurts etc My issue was the quality of the evening buffet - nothing was hot when it should be, and it reminded me of our school canteen. I got food poisoning on night 3 , so ate very little there after for obvious reasons. There was a lovely lady at the grill, cooking to order steaks , other meats and fish, which was very good, but there was little else to accompany it that was of quality. It just wasn't very good. Also, things kept reappearing at breakfast, dinner and in the cute little lounge with a sort of snack bar for teas, soft drinks, fruit, canapés, biscuits etc And, a lot of flies buzzing around the food. Difficult to control in a warmer country, but simply close the restaurant doors and put the aircon. We much preferred eating breakfast and dinner in the lovely poolside orangery. I think its the Mencey I will return to if I visit Tenerife, as the food choices here at the blissfully located, and secluded, Hacienda during the evening are not up to scratch. Rooms, views, spa, pool area and indeed the architecture of the hotel were very good, and the staff consistently warm and welcoming.
