Whether you are visiting Besancon for business or as a tourist, the Hotel Vauban is a great place to stay. Located in the old town and overlooking either the Place de la Revolution or the Doub RIver, history, great shops and restaurants are within minutes on foot, reasonably priced public parking is easily accessible just after crossing the river. The hotel itself is friendly and personable, old yet modern, and reasonably priced.

Single room for a correct price and very clean. A little bit noisy due to the location, but nothing serious.... Everything else (room, breakfast, service) impecable. Difficult to reach directly by car, so inquire first with hotel.

A 3 star hotel without a 24 hour desk. The front doors are locked during the mid-day until 2 or 3 pm, not really sure. The front door is on a narrow walkway beside the river that is used by many single men; sitting, eating, drinking. Also, that front door and walkway face the very hot afternoon sun. The hotel is totally run by one man who also runs two restaurants that open to the other side of the building (the plaza) and it seems he is a primary cook for those restaurants. The restaurant kitchens are in the basement and exhaust their kitchens to the front door walkway. Breakfast is very minimal. Room was small, clean and quiet. The location is very good, in the heart of Besancon.

We arrived in this hotel on Saturday afternoon, settled in & went out to dinner. Arriving back at 10.00 pm, we found the key to the room of the member of our party with a 2 month old baby did not work. The hotel manager at first suggested it was our mistake & then said he couldn't fix it. My husband understandably became very angry, above all because the manager offered no apology or help. The manager said that it was my husband's anger that was preventing him from getting the door open. In the end, three of us, plus baby, had to share one very hot & noisy room, the baby's mother unable to change her child's nappy or her own clothes, absolutely no offer of any assistance from the hotel. Finally at 11 the following morning, the hotelier opened the locked room. We retrieved our belongings & prepared to leave. The manager not only did not apologise; he threatened to call the police if we did not pay for the worst night we have ever spent anywhere. Basil Fawlty eat your heart out

Comfortable and friendly small hotel in the centre of town. Great setting. Excellent breakfast. Monsieur was very helpful. The town has a very relaxed vibe and lots of people were enjoying the weather in numerous bars and cafes. We had dinner in the Italian restaurant just around the corner.

View from the room (top floor) to the cathedral and down on the river was amazing. Excellent location to walk into the historic center or starting a walk along the river bank in either direction. Small but very comfortable room, clean and nicely renovated. Public parking nearby.

We have been to Hotel Vauban several times in the last three years and value the consistent cleanliness and quality of the rooms the friendly reception, excellent breakfast and beautiful location alongside the River in the centre of Besancon. This is the best place in which we have stayed in the city. We highly recommend it for visitors from near and afar.
